Diagnosing those grey/gray matters

BY TYLER FRAZIER
HIP COLOURIST

At some point in our lives we start getting the dreaded grey hair.

Society has taught us that women who let their hair go grey have given up or stopped trying. Many do not realize the constant struggle of coming to the salon twice a month for a root touch-up.

Colouring hair to blend or hide greys can get trickier the more grey you have. Say you’re a natural brunette and see 25%-40% of your head is grey. Adding fi ne cooler-toned highlights (or baby lights) throughout will blend those bad boys and allow you to let them grow in gracefully.

Coloured brunettes with the same percentage might need more than one appointment to achieve their goal due to colour build-up (refreshing the ends) on the hair.

Going Platinum

What if your hair grows in white?! Usually women who colour their hair dark and have natural white hair will see their colourist about every 3 weeks (4-8 weeks is more common).
Depending on the level of natural or coloured hair, transitioning from a brunette/dark blonde to a grey/platinum blonde to ease the harsh demarcation line takes a lot of time, love, money and patience!

Hair goes through stages of decolonization. Let’s say you are lifting from red (which is really starting at black or level 1) and want to go all the way to the palest yellow (platinum blonde or level 10), you’ll need to remove color all over to achieve an even blended natural grey or platinum.

Bottom line: It’s a process and you’ll have to commit to spending time in the chair.

Honestly, the possibilities are endless!
From adding platinum blonde highlights to blend out some pep-per or adding more pepper tones to add dimension to solid silver hair, or a combo of both.
And if you really want to make a statement, add some funky colors there, such as pink or blue or purple!

The Greys Have It

Hair colour is fun, and there are so many options. I know grey seems scary or harsh, but it’s all in the way you present yourself. Don’t fear your grey, embrace it! (Just don’t stop coming to see me!)

P.S.: When you’re planning on changing your look, book a consultation before your appointment so you and your colourist/stylist can be on the same page.

Lashes that Never Run

BY JEANINE
EYELASH EXTENSION TECHNICIAN

When it comes to your summer makeup, you don’t want raccoon eyes.

Is there a better way to escape the mascara drama? Xtreme
Lashes® Eyelash Extensions is the answer.

And you can get these thick, long, dark
lashes at HIP Salon.

Eyelash extensions create the appearance of a brighter, more open and rested eye, thereby creating a more youthful and rejuvenated look.

Xtreme Eyelash Extensions will give you the appearance of having put significant effort into your eye makeup so you can say goodbye to the application of mascara.

Without having to use mascara your
summer will be a breeze. You will look
and feel gorgeous from the moment you wake up until the moment you fall asleep.

Plus, you’ll makeup application time will be dramatically cut — meaning more time to enjoy the warm sun as well as outside activities.

Most people choose Xtreme Lashes
Eyelash Extensions to lengthen their natural lashes while others want their lashes to look fuller.

Those with naturally light-colored lashes choose to have eyelash extensions to darken their
existing lashes.

Eyelash extensions look and feel completely real. The overall effect is added curl, thickness and length, opening up the eye for added definition.

They are flexible and move with your natural lashes. With routine touch-ups every two to four weeks,

it is almost impossible to tell that you are wearing the extensions. You will not feel the addition of the extensions to your lashes, and they will not
cause your natural lashes to fall out ahead of their natural cycle as other enhancement methods can.

Meet with one of our eyelash extension technicians to learn more about Xtreme Lashes® Eyelash Extensions and make the
move to creating longer, thicker, more
beautiful-looking eyelashes.

So What Did We Learn?

BY JAMES JOHNSON
HIP THERMOMETER WIELDER

Before I rehash the main points on how to continue to stay healthy, I’d like to touch on what we may have learned about ourselves during the pandemic.

We have learned to simplify our lives. We don’t need to be running around in a panic constantly. We don’t need to push, push, push. We don’t need constant stimulation. We can sit and read a book. Or sip coffee while watching the sunrise. Or read a book in the middle of the day while sitting outside. Watch that movie that we always wanted to see but never took the time to go see it. We can take the time to connect with ourselves. We can make time to do things for people in greater need than we are. We can help neighbors. We have found that helping people can make you feel good.

We have discovered a new sense of self. We are our best friend. We are the main person who we can depend on in times of trouble. We are the only ones who can ground ourselves. We are the only ones who can make ourselves complete. And when we ground ourselves and feel whole within our existence, then our relation-ships with others can be truly strong. Because we as a person are stronger. We are not depending in outside influences to give us worth. We have self-worth.

As an artist, I am constantly trying new directions. And in the search for a new direction, I’m not really taking care of myself and doing what is best for me. More what is best for art. During the pandemic, I basically stopped creating entirely for a month or two. The drive was not there. I felt repetitive and stagnant. My desire was in flux.

But, I found some old spray paint and started to play around with it. I am now waiting for new canvasses and have a new working medium: spray paint. And once again, like the phoenix that all artists become, new is created out of the ashes of the old. Just like everyone in this pandemic.

The new “us” has emerged stronger from the ashes of the old “us”.

So remember:

  • Wash hands with soap and water. If you can’t, use hand sanitizer.
  • Refrain from hugging, kissing, and shaking hands.
  • Refrain from touching your face as much as possible.
  • Wear masks in public. They reduce the amount of saliva/mucus getting on your face or hands which is how this virus is spread. Use gloves when you can to reduce skin-to-skin contact.
  • If you feel sick, stay home. Do not go out in public.
  • Social distancing does help quite a bit. Remember to do it whenever possible.
  • Enjoy life and appreciate loved ones.

5 HIP Tips for Loving Your Lashes

  1. 24-HOUR RULE: As always no
    water, NO pool water within
    24 hours of getting lashes
done. It is highly recommended to
keep your lashes dry for the first
24 hours after a lash application or
touch-up. The adhesive used to apply
    our lash extensions needs ample
amount of time to cure. Avoid eye
    makeup, swimming, saunas, suntanning,
    and heavy workouts for
    the first 24 hours.
  2. SWEAT: Summer and
    exercise equals sweat. Sweat
    contains natural oils and salt
deposits that, if left on your lashes,
can cause a crusty buildup. To
combat the effects of sweat on your
lashes, have a towel on hand to
keep sweat away from dripping in
your eyes or if comfortable, wear a
sweatband. Be sure to always rinse
your lashes with fresh water after a
    workout or run.
  3. SWIMMING: Rinse your
    lashes after swimming. Always
    rinse your lashes with
fresh water after being in chlorine
and salt water. Be sure to pat dry always,
    no rubbing, to remove excess
    water.
  4. NO HEAT: Avoid extreme heat
    near your lashes. When you’re
    grilling, opening an oven, or
getting cozy by a fire, remember
    extreme temperatures can singe
you lashes, be cautious to not get
    too close.
  5. NO OILY SUNSCREEN: Oil-based
    skincare products have a bad
    reputation for breaking down
the adhesive. Look for a sunscreen
with an oil-free formula. Use caution
    when applying your sunscreen
to ensure it fully soaks in before
swimming and always avoid the eye
area. As always make sure your eye
    makeup and remover is oil-free.
